"The Wedding Cake" is an excellent showcase of Connie's ability to sing an genre. The wonderful acoustic feel of the music is a different sound for Connie's recordings at this point in time. This is one of my favorite LP's because of this. The title song "The Wedding Cake" expresses the different sides of how marriage is supposed to be in a perfect world. Sadly though, few experience this. Songs like "Betty Jo Marshall" is a sad reminder that life doesn't always turn out as we had hoped and to many times people find themselves in a situation they never dreamed of being in and living the consequences of bad choices; and "What mama used to do" speaks for itself! These songs are not the usual selections recorded by Connie during her early years. A bit more "risqué" for her in this era. Especially since she turned down doing "Angel in the Morning" because of its adult content, referencing of a woman "sleeping around in a motel" which she felt would not sit well with her audience. My favorite cut on this LP is "Another Page" it has always resonated with me as it seemed to reflect my own life's journey. It is an up-tempo song with a lot of energy, horns and a hint of truth in life. I hope you enjoy the few clips I have selected and if you do not have this album, try to locate it.
